Federer eases past Young to reach second round
Federer, chasing his 18th Grand Slam title, brushed aside Donald Young 6-3 6-2 6-4.

New York: Top seed Roger Federer began his campaign to win a record sixth US Open with a straight-sets win over America's Donald Young on Sunday. Federer, chasing his 18th Grand Slam title, brushed aside Young 6-3 6-2 6-4.

Young's season of under-achievement hit another low as the American, who only last week stopped a run of 17 defeats in a row, now stands at three wins and 22 losses in 2012.

Federer, who won his 17th Grand Slam trophy thanks to his seventh Wimbledon title earlier in July, will now take on German veteran Bjorn Phau for a place in the round three.

No player in the professional era has won the US Open more than five times, a record Federer shares with Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors.
