New Delhi: Defending champion Roger Federer was in a good touch against 25th seed Mikhail Youzhny and won the first two sets easily.
But in the third set Youzhny put up a good fight as he took it to the tie-breaker. But Federer held on to win the match 6-3, 6-3, 7-6.
He will now play Novak Djokovic in the fourth round.
In the women's section second seed and defending champion Amelie Mauresmo too stormed into the fourth round defeating her unseeded opponent Lucie Safarova in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in a little over an hour.
Playing in her ninth Australian Open, the Frenchwoman was in top form against her opponent from Czech Republic.
She will play another Czech player Lucie Safarova in the next round.
Former champion Serena Williams was also in good nick and fought back brilliantly against fifth seed Nadia Petrova to reach the fourth round.
Serena was a set and 5-4 down but came back to win her third round match 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 for a place in the last 16 against Jelena Jankovic.
Third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova also moved into the fourth round with a comprehensive win over Maria Kirilenko.
Kuznetsova had no difficulty beating her fellow Russian opponent.
She won 6-1, 6-4 and will play Shahar Peer in the next round.
