Saidapet police registered a case against organisers and performers of the Indian Premier League (IPL) V inauguration ceremony held on April 3, 2012 on YMCA grounds, Nandanam, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court was informed on Monday.

However, the names of the celebrities who performed at the inauguration has not been mentioned in the FIR, government pleader Prabha said and refused to reveal to the media the sections under which the case had been registered. The case was registered based on the complaint of an advocate, Prabha confirmed before Justice N Kirubakaran.

Originally, K Jebakumar, an advocate, sought the intervention of the court to direct the Tamil Nadu police to take criminal action against Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, cricketer Douglas Bolinger and pop singer Katy Perry for their alleged obscene performance. According to Jebakumar’s counsel W Peter Ramesh Kumar, apart from those who performed at the event, Rajeev Shukla, chairman of IPL V’s governing council, and Srinivasan, president of BCCI, are liable to attract criminal action under Sections 292 (sale of obscene books), 293 (sale of obscene objects to young persons) and 294 (obscene acts and songs) act.

Advocate P S Raman, who appeared for Srinivasan, said this is an exceptional case where the police ought to have conducted a preliminary investigation before registering the case. “This is an exceptional case not just because of the people involved, but because the event was a public programme,” said the counsel.

“Not a single summon was issued to any of the board members of the BCCI. The BCCI gave the contract for organising the inauguration to private parties and they got in touch with the celebrities and organised the entire event,” the counsel said, defending the BCCI.

Advocate Peter, meanwhile, contended that cricketer Douglas Bolinger and pop star Katy Perry violated their visa conditions because of their alleged obscene act on the stage.

Justice Kirubakaran on hearing the case, impleaded the secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as one of the respondents. He further adjourned the case to Wednesday.
