Representatives of fish workers from 10 coastal states will hold a rally and public meeting at Alappuaha on September 8 as part of their plan to conduct a nationwide agitation against "neglect of coastal communities."

National Fish Workers' Forum (NFF) General Secretary T Peter said in a press release that the Centre, which had rejected the demand from Kerala to include coastal erosion in the list of natural calamities eligible for compensation, should reconsider it. The fish workers' demands include enforcement of the National Green Tribunal's ban on beach and sand mining, an independent ministry for fisheries, regulations on coastal shipping and rehabilitation of families from coastal areas vulnerable to erosion.

The Forum also urged the government to drop the move to lay a submarine gas pipeline from the LNG terminal at Kochi to the thermal power plant at Kayamkulam in view of the difficulties it might cause to fishing operations.
