Five villagers were detained for interrogation after electric wires were found laid on a jungle road suspected to be a trap to poach elephants through electrocution, in Ganjam district.
The five were detained after wires and insulators were found from Landei hill under Jagannath Prasad forest range in the district," forest range officer, Jagannath Prasad A K Banerjee.
"It is being investigated whether they played any role in laying the electric wires on the jungle road," Banerjee said.
He said villagers who lived nearby denied having laid the wires.
The villagers said they had formed a Vana Sarankshana Samiti to protect forest and wildlife from poachers, forest ranger said.
Around 22 elephants divided into three herds were reported to be moving about in the jungle for the last few months, sources said.
