ROURKELA: The Sundargarh district administration heaved a sigh of relief when Brahmani river began to relent on Sunday after rising menacingly for two days. The flood victims are now waiting for water to recede from the inundated areas.
Reports said situation was improving rapidly in the most affected residential pockets along the banks of the river including Balughat, Deogaon, Dandiapali, Panposhbasti and Garjan. However, people evacuated on Friday preferred to stay at the seven makeshift camps with only a few returning home. District Collector Rupa Roshan Sahu on Sunday took stock of the affected areas and functioning of the relief camps. She also reviewed preparations for the health and sanitary challenges ahead. Stressing that the administration is prepared to address postflood concerns, she said loss of property will be assessed from Monday.

Meanwhile, Brahmani flowed at 177 metres near Panposh bridge on Sunday morning and the water level is said to be falling further. On Friday, Brahmani swelled to 181.4 metres against the danger mark of 180 metres.

Torrential rain on Thursday night saw collapse of about 150 mud houses across the two subdivisions. It claimed three lives, while one person was swept away on Saturday in the overflowing Koel river in Bisra block.
