Fog creates havoc in North India
A major power failure in the Northern Power Grid, due to dense fog, plunged many cities into darkness.

New Delhi: The Northern Power Grid suffered a major breakdown on Friday morning due to dense fog.

Eight to 10 power lines went down, plunging areas in Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh into darkness.

However, Chairman of Power Grid Corporation of India R P Singh said, it is only a partial breakdown and that restoration work was in progress.

Flight services have resumed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, as well as the domestic airport in Delhi after heavy fog had disrupted operations the entire morning.

Train services were also disrupted for the second consecutive day in Delhi.

Visibility in the city was down to 200 metres early morning.

With several trains delayed, it becomes an endless wait for passengers at railways stations in Delhi.

"I came here at the scheduled time, then they told me the train is two and half hours late, now they are saying it will be five hours late," a passenger at the New Delhi Railway Station said on Friday morning.

Many Delhi-bound flights were diverted to Ahmedabad, Mumbai and other cities.
