Four persons were arrested on charges of smuggling river sand in two separate cases here on Sunday.
In the first case, a couple of sand-laden bullock carts, owned by Murugesan and Pandy from Agramesi, were intercepted at the Mandupuli bus stop by Village Administrative Officer Karoor Rasith.
They did not possess proper permits to mine the sand. Based on a complaint lodged by the VAO, police registered a case and detained the duo. Similarly, Sayalkudi Police arrested two persons, Marimuthu and Sankar, for allegedly smuggling sand mined from the Malattaru river basin in a lorry to some other places without possessing valid documents. A case has been registered.
Cop Threatened
Nainarkoil Police are on the lookout for two persons who allegedly threatened a policeman when he intercepted their lorry laden with river sand, at Karaimelkudieruppu. Dinesh and Sivaji of Kalliyadiyenthal told head constable Nagasamy that they would bump him off if he arrested them. They then fled the spot, abandoning the vehicle. Police registered a case.
