The reservations of the state regarding the Madhav Gadgil Committee report will be presented before the committee led by K Kasthurirangan appointed by the Centre, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Thursday.
The committee is scheduled to visit the state on Saturday, he said, inaugurating the 8th Kerala Environment Congress (KEC 2012) at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB).
The practical recommendations in the Gadgil Committee report will be implemented, but the impractical ones will be presented before the Kasthurirangan committee for discussion, the Chief Minister said.
The committee, he said, has ignored the realities of the Kerala situation. The committee has declared ecologically fragile Idukki and Wayanad and even places in Thiruvananthapuram city, the Chief Minister said, adding that environmental activities should be realistic.
The state’s farming sector is reeling under the shortage of labourers, markets and climate change. The government is planning to boost activities in this sector through hi-tech and organic farming methods.
KEC 2012 is organised jointly by the RGCB and the Centre for Environment and Development (CED).
Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment executive vice-president V N Rajasekharan Pillai and CED executive director Babu Ambat also spoke. The congress will conclude on Saturday.
