Girl accuses Orissa minister of assault
Soni Sohanee claims Samir Dey made fun of her scheduled caste status, called her a prostitute and let his henchmen beat her up.

Bhubaneswar (Orissa): On Wednesday, a medical student in Bhubaneswar accused the state's Higher Education Minister of assaulting her and confining her to his official residence for several hours.

Soni Sohanee had gone to Higher Education Minister Samir Dey's official residence with a plea to stop her mother's transfer to another city.

She claims that when she met the minister to forward her appeal, he jeered at her since she belongs to a scheduled caste.

Soni alleges the Dey called her a prostitute. "He told me that I had been sent there by the Opposition party. Then his henchmen beat me up."

Although an FIR has been filed against the minister and his henchmen, no action has been taken by the police so far.

The Superintendent of Police of Bhubaneswar refuses to comment on the matter.

The victim's mother Sabitri Mallick, fears that they will never be able to get justice as the man who assaulted her daughter happens to be a minister.

Sabitri was a lecturer in a government college but has since then been asked to leave and has not been taken back into the college for one year despite an order from the Governor and the tribunal court.

The government then decided to transfer her to another state but Sabriti and her family had taken the matter to the press saying that she was being discriminated against because of her scheduled caste status.

Her daughter, Soni, had gone to Dey's residence to request the minister to cancel the transfer order.

When questioned, Samir Dey denied the allegations against him and said "someone" was trying to defame him.

Meanwhile, the National Students Union of India in Bhubaneswar has decided to protest against the minister and the issue is threatening to swell into a massive student unrest in the state.

This is the second sex scandal in the state in the last two days.

On Tuesday a sex racket operating from a BJD MP's guest house in Bhubaneswar had sparked off an uproar in the Orissa assembly.
