HYDERABAD: The Telangana agitation has come as blessing in disguise for the contractors from Andhra region who were awarded the AP Road Development Corporation (APRDC) project of developing the 207- km Hyderabad-Karimnagar-Ramagundam road into a four lane road at a cost of Rs 1,358 crore. When the project was grounded, TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao and several Congress MLAs from Karimnagar district wanted change in its design.Rao wrote a letter to the then chief minister K Rosaiah demanding that APRDC should develop the Rajiv Rahadari on the lines of NH-9.The T leaders wanted bypass roads to villages and towns and several flyovers and foot-over bridges on the national highway. They contended that the project in its present form would not help in containing the road accidents or improving the road transport.TRS legislature party leader E Rajendar also took up the issue with the chief minister and also the road and building officials.Ramagundam MLA Somavaram Satyanarayana took strong objection to the ongoing Rajiv Rahadari project and urged the officials to make several changes after considering public convenience and road safety. Now the T movement is in full swing and as the leaders were busy organising protests, the contractors were doing their work in accordance with the original plan. They have no time to bring pressure on the government to stop the works until the project is reworked. As the leaders are busy, the state government is going ahead with the project without a caring a hoot to the concerns raised by the T leaders.Contractors from Seemandhra region were in a hurry to complete the road works at the earliest and as a result the work has picked up pace. One TRS leader said that the ongoing road works were enough evidence that chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was protecting the interests of the contractors from Andhra region. He said that state government is acting in a similar fashion with regard to Hyderabad Metro Rail project without any regard for the grievances of the locals and also their people's representatives.Meanwhile, Ramgundam MLA Somavaram Satyanarayana said that if APRDC fails to respect demands of T leaders on Rajiv Rahadari works, he would not allow any road development works in his constituency."I am yet to get a reply from the APRDC on the changes I had proposed to the segment of the road that passes through my constituency. If they do not heed to my suggestion,I will not allow the works in my constituency," he said.
