HYDERABAD: A driver of one of the escort vehicles of Governor ESL Narasimhan died after hitting an electric pole at Moinabad on Thursday. Six policemen were also injured in the incident. The condition of two of them is said to be critical.The Governor was on his way to Chilkur Balaji temple around 5 p.m when the accident occurred. His convoy, comprising five vehicles including a Mercedes, was speeding at 110-120 km an hour as the route was cleared of traffic for the VVIP.As the distance between the Mercedes of the Governor and the escort vehicle, a Tata Sumo, was increasing all the time, the driver, Anand (33), pressed the accelerator to catch up with him. But he lost control and hit an electric pole near the Andhra Pradesh Police Academy. He died on the spot while six policemen suffered injuries. The Governor immediately asked his driver to stop the vehicle and rushed to the damaged car. A posse of policemen soon joined and the injured were rushed to the Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills. The Governor drove down to the hospital, got them admitted and spoke with the doctors about their condition. Later, he proceeded to the temple. Senior police officials also rushed to the hospital. Of the injured, the condition of a head constable Sadiq and ARSI Farooq is said to be serious while others -- three constables from the City Security Wing and one from Traffic wing escaped with minor injuries. Sources said the road was slippery due to the rain and driving at top speed had led to the mishap. Anand, a CAR constable and a resident of Chatrinaka, joined the police department in 1995.
