Govt asks Lavasa to stop work till December end
Environment Ministry says Lavasa has violated rules and affected the biodiversity of the Western Ghats.

New Delhi: Ministry of Environment & Forests has upheld its show cause notice on Lavasa Corporation and asked that there be no construction at the Pune site till end of December.

The Ministry of Environment & Forests will give a final view on the controversial hill town project, which has been accused of violating green rules, by then.

The interim order says no work on site can continue. The Ministry order has listed at least seven cases where Lavasa has violated Development Control Rules, affecting the biodiversity of the Western Ghats.

Environment Ministry had slapped a show cause notice on Lavasa Corporation for allegedly violating green norms on November 26. It asked Lavasa to stop work and maintain a status quo at the site

On December 7, Bombay High Court had stayed Environment Ministry's show cause notice order on Lavasa Crop in connection to the legal dispute for its Pune project. Lavasa's main grouse is that it received a show cause notice without being heard.

The court had also directed the Environment Ministry to hear out Lavasa on the show cause notice on December 9 and wanted its report by December 16.

The objections raised by the Environment Ministry in the show cause notice are: project required environment clearance in 2004 from Environment Ministry when only five per cent of project costs were incurred, green clearance needed for construction on hills above 1000m (more than 47 Ha is above a height of 1000 metres) and changes made in first phase of project without sanctions of Environment Ministry.
