Govt puts TV channels in low spirits
The Government has decided to crack the whip on channels that air surrogate advertisements of liquor and tobacco brands.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has clamped down on 31 satellite TV channels for telecasting surrogate advertisements of liquor and tobacco brands.

The channels have been issued show-cause notices as these ads have violated rule 7(2)(viii) of the Advertising Code.

The code prescribed under Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 and rules framed under it says, 'no advertisement shall be permitted which promotes directly or indirectly production, sale or consumption of cigarette, tobacco production, wine, alcohol, liquor or other intoxicant'.

Though, this rule has been in place for years, many companies have sidestepped it by bringing out soda and fruit juice ads by the same name to promote the brand.

To make sure that the channels adhere to the established rules, the ministry has drawn up weekly schedules for its officers to monitor programming across networks.

The Ministry has also issued a warning to seven music TV channels namely - ETC, Channel V, B4U Music, Balle Balle Music, MTV Music, iTV Music and MH1 for telecasting objectionable remix Hindi filmy songs in violation of Programme code prescribed under Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995.

The Ministry has directed these music channels not to telecast these songs and to run a scroll on their TV channels round the clock for a period of three days that they have violated the Programme Code and will be more careful in future.
