Green chillies are being sold at an unprecedented price of Rs 160 per kg due to their shortage in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli. Green chillies play an important role among the vegetables that are essential in everyday cooking. As a result, when people buy vegetables from the shop, then they are often given green chillies as a complementary. Farmers cultivate green chillies in Pavoorchatram, Alangulam, Cheranmahadevi, Pattamadai, Melacheval, Manur and other areas of Tirunelveli district. They usually bring the green chillies grown in these areas to the vegetable markets of Pavoorchatram and Tirunelveli. The vegetable traders buy from these markets and sell in their areas or their designated places. The price of these green chillies has skyrocketed due to unexpected rains in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts. Due to this, the land where the chilli plants were cultivated got waterlogged and rotten.
The heavy rains squashed the green chillies, as a result majority of the crops got washed away. The low yield resulted in the high demand in the market and high prices. As a result, green chillies, which were sold at Rs 86 per kg in the last few weeks, are now being sold at Rs 160 per kg.
This is not the first time that the price of green chillies and other vegetables skyrocketed in Tamil Nadu. Last year, the lack of supply in the vegetable markets on Bagarsha Road in the Villupuram district has led to the price rise. The chillies that were sold at prices between Rs 80 to Rs 120 per kg, shot up to Rs 160 per kg. The price of ginger in the state was Rs 220 per kg. The cost of tomatoes in Tamil Nadu surged and were sold at a price between Rs 110 and Rs 120 per kg. The coriander, which we often ask for free, was also sold at Rs 80 and spring onions at Rs 120 per kg.
