New Delhi: The shockingly lackadaisical attitude of Haryana police in the rape and murder of Sarita has prompted the Punjab and Haryana High Court to come down heavily on the police force.
The court has taken suo moto cognizance of the facts and expressed doubts if the Haryana police would be able to ensure a fair and meaningful inquiry into the case.
The two constables arrested on Wednesday on charges of 'rape by public servants on duty' are in police custody now.
Balraj Singh and Silak Ram had allegedly raped Sarita in Rohtak on April 10. It was 50 days before an FIR was registered.
A disillusioned Sarita committed suicide outside Panchkula Police Headquarters on Monday. The 25-year-old mother of two minor girls left a suicide note alleging the police did not take action.
It was only after her story was splashed across news networks that the police swung into action. Rohtak Range Inspector General of Police Anil Dabra, Superintendent of Police Hanief Qureshi and Deputy Superintendent of Police M Sethia were transferred and the two accused arrested.
The state government has also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the family of Sarita.
