Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain continued to lash many parts of Odisha for the second consecutive day on Saturday throwing normal life out of gear, a Met department official said.

The state has been witnessing heavy rainfall for the past two days due to the impact of a low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal, an official with the Bhubaneswar meteorological centre said.

While Daringbadi town in Kandhamal district, about 350 km from here, recorded the state`s highest rainfall of 83 mm since Friday, Phulbani town in the same district recorded 65 mm of rain during the same period.

Similarly, Bolangir town recorded 59.6 mm followed by Gopalpur with 58 mm of rain, the official said. State capital Bhubaneswar received 25.9 mm of rain, he added.

Traffic was disrupted on a national highway close to the capital city, another official said, adding that schools witnessed low attendance at several places.

The Met office has predicted heavy rain in some areas till Sunday. It also warned fishermen against venturing into the sea due to gusty winds and choppy waters along the state`s coast.

"Gusty winds with a speed of 45-55 km per hour are likely to prevail along and off the state`s coast. Sea condition will remain rough. The fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea," the Met official said.
