Perth: The Lanco International Super Series Hockey 9s is likely to be an annual affair, after the successful hosting of the inaugural tournament in Perth this month, according to Hockey Australia officials.
The capital city of the Western Australian State hosted the first-ever modified four-nation, four-day Hockey 9s event that concluded on Sunday.
By and large, the authorities, sponsors, players and coaches gave a thumbs-up to the experiment.
Hockey Australia authorities, after their men's and women's teams won the titles in style, are contemplating making it an annual event.
The Lanco International Super Series is the first hockey tournament to be telecast live in Australia.
Media reports in Australia said that Hockey Australia Chief Executive Officer Mark Anderson had a discussion with the sponsors about making it a yearly event.
Anderson said Perth is the preferred city for future editions as well.
"This is in recognition of their support for this year's series," he explained.
Manoj Agarwal, CEO of Lanco International, the title sponsors, said, "This is a decision Hockey Australia has to take. However, as sponsors, we are happy this Hockey 9s is a success. Everyone liked it."
"As an Indian company having business interests in Australia, we will continue to support our national game, hockey. However, we will take the call on when need arises," he said.
Jamie Stewart, CEO Commune Sports and Entertainment that marketed and promoted the Hockey 9s, said the event can be held in India, but not in immediate future.
"There is every commercial reason to hold it in India."
"The fans come out, support is there. However, everybody knows the situation in India, and the issue of hockey administration is there," he added.
