Past and Future of 3D films

What if we were only satisfied with the similar kind of movies which hit the theatres near our homes? What if we were content with those stale love stories churned out in a new package every time? What if we were just happy with the visual treat any film provides? Well, the audiences are a hungry lot of people, always looking for something different. To define different, the term-3D films took birth.

3D films took cinema too a new level giving the movie lovers a whole new pattern of entertainment with its unique innovation and improvement of 3D technology with time-to-time. Before 3D came into existence, people use to just watch and enjoy a film unlike a 3D film, where you experience a film.

Lately, 3D films are also catching up in India. Avatar, a 3D film, which entertained people all over the world, also left its mark in India. It has left such a huge impact, that many Indian filmmakers have decided to make 3D films in India. Another 3D film Alice in Wonderland, also created a lot of buzz in India. Clash of the Titans is on the verge of releasing and obviously expectations are sky high. Irrespective of the film doing well or not, the previous films have already nailed their mark in the minds of the people. Obviously, 3D films is here to stay for long. Lets trace the journey of 3D films.

What is 3D?

3-D film is also known as a three dimensional film or S3D film. It is a motion picture which enhances the illusion of depth perception. Originated from stereoscopic photography, a motion picture camera, specially designed to make a 3-D movie, is used to shoot images as if it is seen from two perspectives. Once done, the illusion of depth is created through special projection hardware.

Beginning of 3D films

3D films have existed since 1890 when British film pioneer William Friese Greene projected two films side by side on screen. A stereoscope was given to the viewers to merge the two images and get the 3D feel. However, the mechanics involved was not a long term and a practical solution. The Power of Love is considered as the first 3D film which was screened in the year 1922.

Growth of 3D films

Films like Bwana Devil, Now is the Time and Around is Around made during the 1950’s kicked off the idea of making more and more 3D films. The more 3D concept got popularity, the technology got better with time. Big studious like Walt Disney, Columbia Pictures and Universal International also ventured itself into making 3D films. Robot Monster was another 3D film with a run time of just about an hour. Screenplay writer Wyott Ordung was appreciated by many cinema lovers during that era for its unique filming.

Rise and Rise of 3D films

During the 1980’s, Imax made We are Born of Stars reinvented the style of making a 3D films. With advancement in technology, the viewing became less painful for the eyes. Films like Into the Deep and Wings of Courage were highly appreciated for its 3D viewing. Also, Disney Theme Parks and Universal Studios started using 3D films to entertain people during special occasions.

James Cameron

In 2003, Ghosts of the Abyss directed by James Cameron was released as the first full length 3D Imax feature filmed with reality camera system. The camera was specifically designed for Cameron and the same equipment was used to film Spy KidsGame Over, Aliens of the Deep and Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. Avatar took the platform of 3D to a new level with a global appeal. Theatres which earlier didn’t screen 3D films in India showed Avatar in 3D.

New Trend in Bollywood

Avatar is the film which also brought a trend of making 3D films in Bollywood. Many big production houses are investing in the technology and are in the process to make 3D films at par with Hollywood 3D films. If not this year, 2011 will definitely have a big list of 3D films. Talking about 3D films in India, the only movie which comes to our mind is Chota Chetan. However, with time, as more and more Indian filmmakers will switch to a new gear of making 3D films, we would have more films to discuss if -3D films in India- is the topic of discussion.
