Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has launched a drive to turn Hyderabad into "Beggar Free" city and find a permanent solution to the problem of begging.
According to a survey, in Hyderabad 98 per cent fake beggars are operating with annual income of more than Rs 24 crore. Authorities are now appealing people to stop giving money to beggars.
The campaign was started after a survey revealed that there are 14,000 beggars in Hyderabad. Out of them 98 per cent were found to be fake. Children and differently-abled have been found to be earning up to Rs 2,000 a day.
"Not just huge money like Rs 25 crore that they earn, these beggars are into drugs, prostitution, money lending etc. They are spoiling city," said B Shankar Narayanan, General Secretary of Federation of NGOs of Beggar Free Society.
The GHMC is also appealing to genuine beggars to register themselves for rehabilitation. It is seeking help of various NGOs to make Hyderabad a Beggar Free city.
"We provide rehab as per need. If some one needs training, we will provide help. Children will be sent to schools, senior citizens in old age homes. We will ensure food and shelter to genuine beggars," Narayanan added.
There are genuine people, who are forced to beg for money due to various problems. But it's an open knowledge that begging is a huge business. So next time, think twice before giving money to beggars as they might be millionaires.
