New Delhi: Former prime minister and senior NDA leader Atal Behari Vajpayee released a statement on Wednesday stating that he had no intentions of becoming the president of India.

The issue came up after Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee had raised Vajpayee's name as a potential presidential post nominee in an NDA meeting held on Tuesday.

Though Vajpayee himself has categorically stated that he has no desire of taking on the post, all the NDA leaders who were present at the meeting had unanimously accepted Mamata Banerjee's proposal.

Vajpayee's assertion came in a faxed statement on Wednesday.

"The newspapers have carried reports today about some suggestions that I should stand as a candidate for the post of President of India. I want to state categorically that I have no desire to occupy that office," Vajpayee wrote in the letter.

The BJP leader said the NDA will announce its choice for the post of President of India shortly.

Meanwhile, the BJP stalwart has been authorised by the party to select a nominee for the President's post. In all likelihood, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat will be the party's choice.
