Bengaluru: In violation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, a school in Karnataka has allegedly threatened a five-year-old student, who was admitted under the RTE quota, with expulsion if he fails to “perform well" in kindergarten.
The child’s parents told CNN-News18 that the boy underwent a surgery last year and hasn’t been able to cope well with the curriculum since. They said the child secured a C+ grade, just enough to pass kindergarten. And authorities at the Vidya Vardhaka School are allegedly not happy with it.
The parents alleged that the school has arranged for a re-examination on May 15 and that the child will be asked to leave if he secures C+ again. The parents alleged that they were being treated “this way" as their child was admitted under the RTE quota meant for economically weaker sections.
“They (school authorities) said that if he doesn't perform well, they will issue a transfer certificate. The principal wants us to give an undertaking that we will do whatever the school decides after re-examination," the boy’s mother told CNN-News18.
Speaking to CNN-News18, Karnataka Child Rights Commission chief said: “What the school has done is not right. We will take a strict action against the school."
Commissioner of Public Instruction A Sowjanya said: “We have received the complaint. Under RTE, no child can be detained or asked to leave the school. We will look into the matter."
School authorities refused to comment.
