Komotini (Greece): Greek border police arrested 38 Indian clandestine immigrants and two men suspected of smuggling them into the country near the Turkish border on Thursday, police said.
The immigrants, all young men, were hidden in a truck with Albanian number plates and driven by a 32-year-old Albanian man and a 30-year-old Greek man.
The pair had been paid 114,000 dollars to drive the men to Athens, police said.
The men were arrested 10 kilometre from the border near Sapes in the northeast of the country during a routine check.
They had crossed the Evros River that separates Greece and Turkey to enter the country illegally, police said.
The immigrants and two drivers were taken to Komotini to be handed over to the courts.
The truck was seized and the immigrants will be expelled, police said.
Situated on the European Union's southeastern edge, Greece is a popular entry point for thousands of would-be immigrants from Asia seeking access to Western Europe, mainly through Turkey.
