New Delhi: The Indian table tennis duo of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Soumyadeep Roy have entered the second round of the World Table Tennis Championships in Zagreb, Croatia on Wednesday.
The Indian pair upset favourites Stephan Fegrel and Werner Schlager of Austria 11-4, 6-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9.
The pair's win was the only standout performance from the Indian contingent in an otherwise disastrous start in the World Championships.
"We have created an upset and it's special because Schlager is a former world champion. He is currently ranked 11th in world," an elated Soumyadeep told PTI from Zagreb.
Sharath Kamal and Soumyadeep Roy will now face Serbia's Aleksander Karakasevic and Slobodan Grujic in the second round.
The Indian women crashed out of the doubles competition as leading paddlers Mouma Das and Poulomi Ghatak lost 6-11,5-11,9-11,6-11 to the Spanish pair of Galia Dvorak and Sara Ramirez in the first round.
Mouma was eliminated from the singles as well, losing out to Russia's Irina Kotikhina 8-11,4-11,4-11,7-11 in the first round.
In the mixed doubles too, the Indian pair of Sharath Kamal and Poulomi Ghatak bowed out 9-11,13-11, 5-11,6-11 to Chinese Xin Xu and Yan Guo in the first round.
The second Indian mixed doubles pair of Anirban Nandi and Kasturi Chakraborty were beaten 3-11, 9-11, 4-11, 11-9, 8-11 by Austria's Bernhard Presslmayer and Qiangbing Li.
