New Delhi: The Indonesian Telecommunication Regulation Body - BRTI - is reportedly threatening to block BlackBerry data services in Indonesia. BRTI said that it may have to end the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service in Indonesia, as reported by the Indonesian newspaper The Jakarta Post.
According to a BRTI member, "Because RIM has not been cooperative, it is possible that we will soon end BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) and BBM service. BlackBerry therefore, would just be like other cellular phones."
The real cause of tension seems to be RIM's recent move to build servers in neighbouring Singapore instead of Indonesia. As per The Verge, a technology website: it also seems plausible that the threat is the country's way of strong-arming RIM into letting it monitor data, something it currently can't do because data sent to and from BlackBerrys is encrypted and goes to foreign servers.
However, Research in Motion, on the other hand, said it doesn't understand why some local officials are again threatening to block its services even after the company has fulfilled its commitments to improve its operations and cooperate with authorities in Indonesia this year.
"We are getting mixed and contradictory messages through the media," about what Indonesia expects said Gregory Wade, regional managing director for Research in Motion, adding "We can't imagine that the Indonesian government would take a stance that would negatively affect millions of BlackBerry users," as reported by the Wall Street Journal, the international daily newspaper.
The Canadian tech giant was not directly threatened with restrictions at its meeting with Indonesian government officials, but the company is said to be talking the reports seriously and is all set for further discussions to clear up any disagreements.
