Irregularities in MKU appointments alleged

A public interest writ petition has been filed at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court here alleging irregularities in appointment of faculty at Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU).

The petitioner, I Ismail, a former syndicate member of the University and the general secretary of MKU Principals Association, said a large number of faculty were appointed unlawfully during the tenure of R Karpaga Kumaravel as the vice-chancellor of MKU.

The audit report for 2010-11 summarised the irregularities and the issue was raised in the Academic Council and the senate meetings of MKU in 2012 and complaints have been sent to the UGC, said the petitioner. Ismail is the incumbent principal of a Dindigul college.

According to Ismail, several persons who have allegedly not gone through 10th and plus-two have been appointed as assistant professors, associate professors, and professors.

Candidates who were rejected by the scrutiny committee were appointed and quota policy was also not followed, he claimed.

Therefore, he sought the intervention of the HC to direct the incumbent Registrar and MKU to declare the candidates unlawfully appointed as ineligible to continue teaching.

A division bench comprising Justice P P S Janarthana Raja and Justice M Duraiswamy have posted the case on October 1.
