HYDERABAD: The YSR Congress party is in a dilemma on how to go about the contentious issue of Telangana statehood. When the issue figured at the party’s governing council meeting on Wednesday, party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy could not make any announcement and deferred the matter to the plenary meetings scheduled to be held on July 8 and 9.According to sources, Jagan elicited the opinions of the governing council members on the issue. Some members reportedly wanted to know why they had to take a decision on the issue now. But, members from Andhra and Rayalaseema including M Mareppa and Sobha Nagireddy wanted Jagan to take a decision in the interest of the party.Another member from Telangana suggested  constitution of a committee on Telangana so that they could buy some time. Another member from Telangana also wanted Jagan to postpone the decision to a later date. One more member opined that a final decision should be taken by the party president. But Jagan said he wanted to know the opinion of all the governing council members. He opposed the constitution of a committee and said it was nothing but putting the issue in cold storage. He, however, told the meeting that the party would take a categorical decision on the issue soon. Finally the meeting concluded without taking any clear stand on Telangana issue.Party spokesperson Ambati Rambau told reporters later that the second day meeting of the governing council discussed farmers’ issue and other issues. It was decided to organise dharnas before all the district collectorates on farmers’ problems on June 13 and that Jagan would participate in a dharna before Mahaboobnagar district collectorate.  The party has decided to launch a membership drive from June 15 for a month. It has also been decided to constitute mandal and village level ad hoc committees and prepare itself for the forthcoming elections to local bodies.
