The Tamil Nadu and Puducherry unit of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) is planning to launch a campaign to spread awareness on ‘who Prophet Mohamed is’. The ten-day campaign, beginning on October 5 in both the states, is aimed at countering an anti-Islam video titled ‘Innocence of Muslims’ that had incited turmoil in many Islamic countries in Middle East and South Asia.
Office bearers of the unit K M Siraj Ahmed and Mohamed Hanifa who were here to address a press conference on Wednesday said that the campaign was to justify the sentiments of Muslims, reciprocated by the movie which, according to them was ‘historically inaccurate, morally deprived and a hate speech to its core’. The movie was not freedom of expression but an expression to incite violence and hence should be condemned, they said.
“We strongly believe that education is the solution to ignorance and a strong support to establishing tolerance and lasting peace, hence we will channelise our energies to educate our fellow citizens about Islam and the noble life of Prophet Mohamed in a positive, proactive and peaceful way,” they added.
A lot of reading materials in the form of handouts, books, banners and documentaries have been prepared that would be distributed during the campaign, besides placing them in the social media. Press conferences, campus lectures, hall meetings and public meetings would also be conducted. A state-level essay competition would be conducted for higher secondary and college students on the life of prophet Mohamed, they added.
