Srinagar: the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday claimed that they had cracked the DSP Ayub Pandith lynching case and have arrested 20 people.
“20 accused have been arrested in the case while one was killed in an encounter in Budgam recently,” IG, J&K Police, Muneer Khan told the media.
“Sajjad Gilkar, who was killed in encounter, was the main culprit behind the lynching,” he added.
DSP Mohammed Ayub Pandith was lynched by a mob on June 23rd after he opened fire on a group of people who caught him clicking pictures near a mosque in Nowhatta area of Srinagar. The incident reportedly occurred before separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was to make a speech at the Jamia Masjid.
Pandith, who was in civilian clothes, was caught clicking pictures outside the mosque, following which the officer opened fire with his service pistol, injuring three people. He was caught by a mob and beaten to death near the mosque.
IG Khan was particularly appreciative of the help given by civilians in the investigation. “People voluntarily came forward and helped us in the case. It was only because of the help of general public that we could go ahead in the case. First we arrested three of the accused who led us to others evidence.”
He also said the iron rod used to beat Pandith has been recovered along with his pistol and his cellphone.
“More evidence will be collected in the case,” Khan said.
