KOCHI: The new report brought out by the State Crime Record Bureau throws light on the fact that Kochiites were duped of over Rs 30 lakh by various fake recruiting agencies in 2011. The report adds that there has been an increase in the NOC cheating cases in the district compared to that of 2010.As many as 14 cases were registered in 2011 wherein people were cheated by fake recruiting agencies by promising them high-level jobs abroad. A sum of Rs 33,72,000 was siphoned off from the public in this regard. However, the police could arrest only one person in this connection in 2011.In 2010, six cases were registered and the victims lost Rs 18.5 lakh. Three persons were arrested in 2010.According to police, in the majority of the cases, people were cheated by promising jobs in Gulf and European countries. There were also cases government jobs in Afghanistan were offered.Police RaidsThe police have raided several agencies that were operating without licence. “The agencies should get the approval from the Ministry of Human Resources and the Protector of Emigrants (PoE). Some agencies lured the people by conducting interview in posh hotels and by promising them six-figure salary. More than 200 agencies operate with licence and the same number operate without it and engage in fraud,” a police official said.Officials said many people from other states too had fallen prey to these recruiting agencies. “They give advertisement on websites and conduct interviews over phone. Many from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh were cheated in this manner. They were later asked to pay service charges running up to several lakh,” officials added.It is the nursing students, mostly women, who mostly fall into such traps. “The nurses became easy prey as they are the ones who always wanted to go abroad. Some fake agencies even approached the medical institutions and promised them campus recruitments. Only way to check such agencies is to look into the details and licence number ,” the officials said.
