Karnataka government would set up ten fast-track courts to exclusively try crimes against women, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra said on Tuesday.

He told reporters in Bangalore that an order to this effect has already been issued, adding, he would be meeting the High Court Chief Justice D H Waghela. Including district judge, as many as 37 staff would be provided to each court.

Three such courts would come up in Bangalore, and one each in the district headquarters town of Belgaum, Dakshina Kannada, Gulbarga, Kodagu, Mandya, Mysore and Ramanagara, the Minister said.

Number of such cases in other districts of Karnataka are less, not necessitating establishing such courts, he said. The move to set up such courts is for speedy disposal of such cases and instill confidence among women, the Minister said.

Jayachandra also said he has written a letter to the Home Minister K J George and Women and Child Development Minister Umashree to ensure rigorous implementation of legislations which provide for stringent punishment to persons who commit or abet offences against women.
