Even as the work of the venues of Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2012 is going on, artists from abroad are slowly stepping on Kochi shores to be part of the project.
Arial Hassan, an Argentinean visual artist who lives and works between Germany and Australia, is in Kochi. He has been invited by Kochi-Muziris Biennale to bring a project titled Hypothetical Future Value (HFV). A part of the project recomposes photographic portraits of young people into abstract paintings. Hassan will be spending seven days in Kochi interacting with young residents of Fort Kochi and inviting them to be part of the project. With this Kochi is turning into a hub of creative activities.
Artists both acclaimed and emerging from across the world will be discussing new projects with Kochi-Muziris Biennale. They will also survey exhibition sites and conduct research into the region’s history and culture.
Hossein Valamanesh, one of Australia’s most senior contemporary artists, visited Kochi to select a Kochi-Muziris Biennale exhibition space for an art installation. Hossein Valamanesh works in sculpture, painting, installation and collage. Inspired by personal experiences and memories, he uses ordinary objects and natural materials to create visual poetry that reflects his life in Australia and his earlier experiences of his birthplace, Iran. Hossein is working on an installation for Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2012 and will return soon to begin work in a space in Fort Kochi.
Artist visits are an exciting part of the Biennale. Vivan Sundaram is also in Kochi. Atul Dodiya, Sheela Gowda, Kiran Subbaiah, T Venkanna, Srinivasa Prasad, Justin Ponmany, Anita Dube, Nalini Malani, LN Tallur, Alex Mathew, Amanulla Mohajadidi (Afghanistan), Joseph Semah (Amsterdam) and Rohini Devasher are scheduled to visit the melting pot.
Artists Subodh Gupta, Sudarshan Shetty, Jyothi Basu, Shaina Anand, Reji KP and Sanchayan Ghosh visited Kochi.
Kochi-Muziris Biennale is also working with artists residing in Kochi including Upendranath T R, Vivek Vilasini, Jalaja P S, K Reghunadhan, Zakir Hussain and Siji R Krishnan. Artists submit proposals for projects inspired by their Kochi experience and their investigations into the mythic past of Muziris after the research visit.
