KOCHI: The pitiable condition of the roads in the city was one of the issues  that topped the list in 2011. The rain that continued to lash even a month  after the monsoon worsened the condition, forcing the Kochi Corporation to  take some immediate steps. The Kerala State Construction Corporation was entrusted with the repair of  some major roads. The Public Works Department (PWD) undertook the work of 13  roads. The Corporation also organised a road conclave to discuss the steps  needed to improve the condition of the roads. It submitted a proposal to the  Chief Minister suggesting that the introduction of designer roads and   scientific approach for construction and maintenance of roads are important.Solid Waste ManagementThe bad state of the existing Solid Waste Treatment Plant at Brahmapuram and  piling up of waste in the surrounding areas were discussed widely in 2011. The present Council blamed the former one for the bad state of the plant and  demanded a vigilance inquiry into the alleged irregularities behind the construction of the plant. As the construction of a new plant is the only feasible idea, the Corporation is planning to call an Expression of Interest (EoI) soon. However, since the construction of the new plant will take nearly one-and-a-half year, the Corporation will have to think of an alternative measure to tackle the issue. With the earlier system like  collecting waste from households and public places failing to yield the desired results, the corporation is planning to introduce waste treatment units in every apartment complex.
