Labour scene has changed

Though trade unions in Kerala have become far less combative in recent times, a perception about their militancy continues to leave a section of investors concerned about starting businesses in the state, noted the US Country Session at the ‘Emerging Kerala’ meet on Wednesday. The situation on the labour front has changed for the better, but not the mind-set of a few entrepreneurs outside Kerala, opined some speakers at the session, which had the theme ‘Doing Business with USA’, held as part of the meet here at the Le Meridien Convention Centre. US Principal Commercial Officer (South India) James Golsen and Michael Cathey of the United States Consulate, Chennai, addressed the gathering, giving briefs on various kinds of visas issued by their office and the procedures involved in their processing.  Golsen said that his office has succeeded in cutting down considerably the wait for a visa. “We interview as many as 1,000 applicants a day,” he added. Cathey said that the US is yet to implement its plans to issue Startup Visas, conceived to help smoothen the establishment of new firms in America.
