Sri Lankan Navy personnel detained two Indian fishermen and four Sri Lankan citizens for allegedly smuggling tobacco and ganja in a boat on Friday.
Source said, the Lankan navy ship was out in the sea on routine patrol across its boundary when the personnel spotted a mechanised boat moving in a suspicious manner in the Lankan waters.
They intercepted the boat and tried to verify the documents with the inmates.
Meanwhile, the Lankan navy personnel recovered 30 kgs of ganja and more than 400 kgs of tobacco and snuff powder concealed in the boat.
They detained the two Indian fishermen - Susai (29) and Alangaram (29) of Thankatchimadam - along with four Lankan citizens.
The six smugglers were handed over to Kalpatti police coming under Puthalam district jurisdiction. The Lankan police were conducting inquiries with the six persons.
It may be recalled that four other persons - Balamurugan, Mari, Deepa and Nambu of Rameswaram - were arrested by Lankan Navy along with two Sri Lankan citizens for smuggling tobacco and snuff powder in a boat to Sri Lanka last month. They were incarcerated in Puthalam prison.
Meanwhile, two other persons were detained on the same charge.
