HYDERABAD: The Lokayukta has asked handlooms and textiles minister P Shankar Rao to respond to allegations that he tried to “misuse” his official position to transfer a tahsildar. The Lokayukta issued the notice based on newspaper reports that the minister has been bringing pressure on the government for transfer of Tirumalagiri tahsildar L Rama Devi. Local newspapers had reported that Shankar Rao was interfering in the official duties of the tahsildar and brought pressure on Hyderabad district collector to shift the tahsildar. However, the district collector had opposed to transfer Rama Devi as recommended by the minister, the newspapers reported. Taking suo motu cognisance of the reports, the Lokayukta decided to conduct an enquiry into the allegations of misuse of power and interference in administrative affairs by the minister and issued a notice to Shankar Rao, the sources said. The Lokayukta has directed Rao to file his reply by December 5, they said adding the minister received the notice two days ago. However at a press conference in the Congress party office on Thursday, Shankar Rao said he as local public representative had made a complaint to the district collector seeking action against the tahsildar concerned for ‘failure’ to discharge her duties properly. “If Lokayukta feels that I am wrong (for talking on behalf of the people) then I am sorry. So far, I did not know what allegations were made against me.I will respond after seeing the notice,’’ he said.
