Luge athlete Shiva Keshavan of India set a new Asian speed record of 134.3 kmph.

New Delhi: Luge athlete Shiva Keshavan of India set a new Asian speed record of 134.3 kmph to win the gold medal at the 2011 Asia Cup.

His timing in the first run was 50.162 seconds, a mere 0.09 seconds behind the current track record, and 50.221 in the second, clocking a total of 1:40:383.

Runner-up Takahisa Oguchi from Japan, who was the previous Asia Cup winner, scored a total time of 1:40:861 seconds. Keshavan had previously set a record for being the fastest man in Asia at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010.

He thus became the first-ever gold medal winner for India in an international winter sports event.

"It was a fantastic race. I am very happy to have won the gold for India. Thanks to all my supporters back in India.

"Thanks to my sponsors. I know I can perform even better and hope to break the remaining track records next time!" Keshavan said.
