New Delhi: A senior Congress leader on Sunday refused to admit that sealing and demolition of illegal properties in Delhi was the main reason for its defeat in the civic polls.
"Loss is a loss and defeat is a defeat. By and large we know what are reasons for the debacle," Kapil Sibal, Union Minister and an MP from Chandni Chowk said. The Congress got 69 seats and the BJP 164 in elections to the 272-seat Town Hall on Saturday.
Sibal, though, refused to list the reasons for the defeat but discounted the reactions of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her bete noire DPCC chief Rambabu Sharma.
"There could be more reasons for the defeat (than what they said)," the lawyer-turned politician said.
While Dikshit blamed the state leadership for the debacle saying Sharma has to take responsibility as he was responsible for ticket distribution, the DPCC chief said many emotive issues like sealing and demolition spelt doom for the party.
Sharma also said the ticket distribution was done in consultation with Dikshit.
He said Congress' performance this time was much better than BJP when it lost power in MCD in 2002.
"In 2002, BJP won 19 seats. And by that standard with the seats doubling it could have 38. But Congress have 64 this time," he said.
