NUAPADA: Maoist shadow looms large over the ensuing panchayat polls with the rebels striking back at the State Government for hounding them in their bastion. The killing of Nuapada Block Chairman Sunil Kumar Dewangan on Saturday afternoon at Godhus in the district has spread panic among the political parties here. While they are too scared to speak, some are even contemplating retirement from public life. The Maoists have cast their shadow in earlier polls here with their call for boycott reflecting on low turnout. They seem to be in complete control of the areas in and around Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary.Admitting to the fear psychosis gripping political parties and workers following the killing of Dewangan, former BJD Nuapada Block chairman Ghasiram Majhi, who is now in the Congress, said the honest people have nothing to fear. The situation would improve by the time the elections are notified, he added.Inmates Call Off StrikeSambalpur: The 17 Maoists, lodged in Sambalpur Circle Jail, called off their fast-unto-death stir on Monday following assurance of early trial by Collector Mrinalini Darswal and ASP Dilip Kumar Deo. They had been on a hunger strike since Friday protesting arrest of innocent people for alleged Maoist links and delay on the part of the police in producing them in court. The Collector, however, said the police had sufficient evidence against those arrested and it was for the Court to decide whether they are guilty or not guilty.
