Purulia: A group of Maoist rebels vandalised the house of a local CPI(M) leader and set a country liquor shop on fire at Kurni village in Purulia district on Tuesday night.
Police said around 30-35 heavily armed Maoists barged into the house of a local committee member of the CPI(M) Phatik Mondal - at Kurni village under Balarampur police station - and damaged it from inside. They also looted three motorcycles before leaving the spot. However, there was no report of any injury as no one was present in the house at the time of the attack.
Later, they targeted the liquor shop of Banshi Mondal, another local worker of the CPI(M), and bombed it using dynamite. The liquor shop was reduced to rubble in the explosion.
The Maoists also left leaflets declaring that all these attacks were carried out to protest against the flushout operation in Lalgarh. They also warned that unless the Centre and state government stopped the operation completely, these attacks would continue.
A manhunt had been launched to nab them, police said, adding no arrests were made so far.
This is the third such attack carried out by the Maoists in Purulia district in protest against the Lalgarh operation. Earlier, they torched a CPI(M) party office at Barabazar in Bhawanipur area of this district.
A bomb squad had also defused a powerful landmine planted underneath the rails by suspected Maoists near Biramdi station of Chandil-Purulia section of SER's Adra-Chakradahrpur division.
A four-member bomb squad from Kolkata arrived and used water cannon to defuse the landmine which was powerful enough to uproot rails and cause heavy damage to man and property.
The mine was planted by four suspected Maoists, who assaulted two railway employees after robbing them of mobile phones and valuables.
The detection of landmine and subsequent cancellation of the route for more than 16 hours disrupted train services of the South Eastern Railway.
