KOCHI: To end the deadlock over the pulling down of the North Railway Over-bridge (ROB), the district authorities are exploring the possibilities of diverting a major chunk of buses and other vehicles through the Vallarpadom four-lane road. The district administration has presented the proposal before the state government. Though the district administration was planning to pull down the RoB on May 15, it could not start the work as the Kochi Corporation authorities objected to it. The civic body wanted to have an alternative traffic arrangements in place first. The district administration is waiting for the state government to take a final decision in this regard. "We have presented the idea before the state government. Many of the byroads in the city can be renovated before Onam. Only then the reconstruction of the North RoB will start," District Collector P I Sheik Pareed said. "It is the narrow sideroads of the bridge that will be demolished first. We will pull down the central portion of the bridge only after renovating the sideroads," Sheik Pareed said. The reconstruction work has been entrusted to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). As there are enough funds for the reconstruction work, there will not be much delay if the authorities secure the Railway's permission to pull down the existing RoB soon. The state government has already handed over Rs 158-crore for the preparatory work of Kochi Metro Rail to the DMRC. There are also suggestions that the state government should constitute a mechanism to monitor the work.
