BANGALORE: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) may allow vendors to set up shops inside the stations depending on the number of commuters using metro everyday. Speaking to Express, BMRCL official U A Vasant Rao, said, “We have to first examine the commuter circulation area and see if there is enough space for the commuters.” However, he added that there will be a facility for ATMs in the stations.Yashwant Chawan, public relations officer, BMRCL, had earlier said that the decision to set up kiosks for the benefit of consumers will be taken only after the metro line is declared open to the public. Vasant Rao, stressed upon this and said commuters’ convenience and comfort is given preference over commercial development. But BMRCL has begun the process of exploring additional sources of revenue. Following the footsteps of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited, the BMRCL has also invited tenders in search of an external consultant to help them design retail space, if not commercial space.Online sources display the document containing BMRCL’s response to pre-queries submitted by bidders for the tender. The consultant will help in generating revenue from advertisement, naming of metro stations, co-branding products and retailing commercial space and sponsorship of events. However, it is also clear that all retail activity must match the overall design of the stations.
