New Delhi: Grand preparations have been made for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's three-day fast for peace and harmony in Ahmedabad, with an estimate of over Rs 50 lakhs to be spent over the next three days.
A five-tier security ring is being thrown around Gujarat University's plush convention hall in Ahmedabad. The venue has been turned into a fortress. Nearly 12,000 policemen have been deployed at GMDC grounds in Ahmedabad.
Ahmedabad is already reeling under a terror threat, hence keeping in mind the security situation, four quick response teams, two Chetak and 9 SRPF teams are also on standby at the venue. About 50 CCTVs have been installed at the venue and and there are about 35 handheld cameras at venue.
Other grand arrangements in place at the venue include a 2000-car capacity VIP parking, 24X7 mobile ICU with 10-15 member medical team.
MODI'S FAST: COUNTING THE COST
with a daily rental of Rs 5 lakhs for the venue, the total rental cost for three days is Rs 15 lakh, out of which Rs 10 lakhs has been paid in advance.
Rs 30 lakhs has been spent on the decor, lights and seating arrangements, Rs 3 lakhs have being spent on the pandal.
With the agenda to highlight the need for communal harmony, Narendra Modi on Friday wrote another open letter where he expressed sadness for the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Several senior BJP leaders are expected to be part of the fast, along with representatives of other NDA alles barring the JDU.
And hoping to match upto Modi's moves is the Congress. The party is doing its own fast on the footpath outside Mahatma Gandhi's Sabaramti Ashram.
While it may struggle to beat Modi during elections, at least on the fast the party is trying to outsmart him - their fast will end a couple of hours after Modi ends his own. State Congress leaders say their fast is a satyagraha against corruption.
