KOCHI: Ports Minister K Babu has said the UDF Government under the leadership of Oommen Chandy will consider several welfare projects, including creation of additional posts in the police force. After inaugurating the representative meeting of 24th Kerala Police Officers Association convention here on Sunday, K Babu said the UDF Government has brought several reforms in the Police Department.The Minister said the demand for a canteen service in the police department was a long-pending demand. The department will be rewarded for its service with separate fund for canteen which will supply goods at a cheaper rate,” Babu said.The minister said the government has decided to appoint 500 sub-inspectors, 1,000 ASIs and 1,000 constables this year itself. The demand for a minimum of four promotions to every policeman will be taken into account. He also added the government would address the shortage of staff in the Kochi traffic police. He said the traffic police will be strengthened by installing cameras and advanced gadgets to make the department more effective.He also raised concern over the increasing number of criminals in the police force. Later, the minister distributed awards to the children of policemen who scored good marks in Plus-Two, degree and post-graduate examinations. The Police Officers Association president P Anand spoke on the 32 demands, which included timely promotion and revision of the pay scale for each policeman. City Police Commissioner M R Ajith Kumar spoke on the occasion.
