Mumbai: Billabong High, a school in the suburbs of Mumbai, is not able to get an ICSE affiliation leaving almost 2,000 students in the lurch.
From being a high profile school to an institute mired in controversies, this seems to be the story of Billabong High, an upmarket school in suburban Mumbai.
The school had promised the best education for a heavy fee - reportedly Rs 1 lakh per year. The school has been refused an affiliation by the the Delhi-based council, ICSE, because it does not match up to some of the standards set by ICSE.
The foundation to which Billabong High is affiliated, Kangaroo Kids, is playing the blame game with the management and franchisee, Rustom, blaming each other for the mess.
Managing Director Kangaroo Kids Foundation, Leena Arsher, says, "We had offered assistance, parents have offered assistance but Rustom said that he has contacts and that the affiliation would not be a problem."
Rustom says, "We have all the necessary arrangements made and we will get the affiliation. There's nothing to worry about."
On the face of it, Billabong High is a high profile school, but with no affiliation and controveries galore, it's the parents and the students who have been left in a lurch.
Says ad-guru Prahlad Kakkar whose children study in the school, "My wife has written several letters saying that infrastructure is crappy."
Celebrities or common folk, parents of Billabong High students speak in one voice, but unless the infighting between the management and franchisee is sorted out and the ICSE relents, the students may be headed for an uncertain future.
