It was a first after three years, exactly three years after 'Munnabhai MBBS' released. It was such a delight to see happy faces walking out of the theatre, people who looked as if they carried the film with them even as the last of the images of the end credits dulled away into darkness. 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' may not be as good as 'Munnabhai MBBS' but it makes you think, you laugh with the characters,it has memorable scenes, basically it does what a film is supposed to do, entertain and that it definitely does. And imagine doing that without too much of a hoopla over shooting the film overseas in New York, with leaves flying in the background, without the fanfare and overt Manish Malhotra kind of influence, without making you wait and watch through unneccesarry forced and mostly plastic humour. Imagine making an entertaining film, and having Gandhiji share as much screen space as Sunju baba and Arshad. People clapped and people whistled and no there were no unneccessary item girls, booty shaking on the screen. I walked out of the theatre and messaged a good friend that amazing is the only word that comes to my mind.

I remember watching 'Munnabhai MBBS' without knowing that the film would spawn in its wake a whole generation of people who would eulogise Munnabhai and Circuit through their quirks that everybody and almost anybody could relate to. I remember looking at the movie's title and thinking, what kind of a name is that. And I remember thinking and wincing away in my mind, wondering if Sanjay Dutt could handle a comedy. And boy was I wrong! In the end all that mattered was that I laughed away unabashedly just as I did while I watched Hrishida's comedies. It was a relief to know that there was some hope after all. Maybe bollywood's not just about actresses dancing away in shimmering sarees on cold, ice-clad mountains, men wearing fashion labels and unneccessary melodrama. Not that the Yash Chopra kind of movies are not entertaining, but sometimes, you want the Hrishida kind of cinema, that indulges some degree of reality, carries a message and doesnt move away from neccesary cinematic liberties taken by Bollywood, which would be the ubiquitous five songs! And you enjoy the songs as well, they maybe inspired (the tune of pal pal sounds remarkably similar to Cliff Richard's You are my theme for a dream) but they are definitely hummable and are shot very well. Particularly the "Samjho Ho hi gaya" song is a cinematographer's vision as it enters the lane of dhobhi-ghat home, which is the one place where Munnabhai and Cicruit generally have their philosphical discussions on life and love, and turn it into a circus ring. Yes the film has some sentimental scenes between Munnabhai and Circuit which may be a tad dramatic but the film does'nt ever go over the top.
