Music piracy to face the music soon
Music piracy to face the music soon
Punjabi pop is facing the music after being hit by piracy and the state govt is planning to introduce the Goonda Act to check it.

Hoshiarpur (Punjab): Punjabi music has become a rage all over India. No Bollywood movie is complete without it and music channels thrive on it.

With all the popularity, it may sound unbelievable but the truth is that this industry is actually in dire straits. The number of music albums released has come down from about a hundred a month to barely 20 - a more than 80 per cent fall.

The reason - music piracy.

Raiding agent of music companies, Ramesh Lakhanpal says "Piracy is harming the industry. Companies sell CDs at Rs 100 but pirated CDs, which have several albums in one CD, are available in the market for just Rs 25."

The state government is now looking into the issue.

Cabinet Minister for Cultural Affairs, Punjab, Partap Singh Bajwa says, "The government is seriously thinking of bringing in Goonda Act. The proposal is with the Chief Minister and we hope that it will come through in a couple of weeks."

The Goonda Act allows the police to proclaim a regular offender a 'goonda' (goon) and order him out of city limits for a specified period.

If the Act is applied, people who run the business of pirating CDs and selling them may be in big trouble.

What's your reaction?
