SAMBALPUR: The revelry in Sambalpur has reached new heights with the Durga Puja. Around 64 puja pandals have been erected across the town which are glittering in the night with huge electric arcs coming up in every corner of the town.Durga Puja acquired the status of Sarbajanin Durga Puja (community festival) here in 1918 following worship of Goddess Durga at Kalibadi by Bengali community. The Puja of Kalibadi continues to be untouched by modernity. Like Kalibadi, the Puja at Budharaja is also performed in the traditional Bengali style and the priests are specially invited from West Bengal. Even dhakis are brought in from Kolkata to add to the festive fervour. The ‘Sindur Khela’ is organised by Kalibadi and Budharaja committees.At Ambedkar Nagar pandal in Gurudwara Lane of Mudipada, bangles are offered to married women by the organisers. At Daleipada lake, people take out a procession wielding traditional weapons on the Mahastami day and congregate at Samaleswari temple where they perform ‘Akhada’ on the temple premises.
