New Delhi: Supermodel Naomi Campbell was sentenced to five days of community service by a New York city criminal court afters he pleaded guilty to hitting her maid with a cell phone over a pair of missing jeans.
''I threw a cell phone in the apartment. The cell phone hit Ana. It was an accident because I did not intend to hit her,'' Campbell was quoted by Associated Press as telling the Manhattan Criminal Court Judge, Robert Mandelbaum.
The phone hit the housekeeper on the back of the head causing a wound that required stitches.
Assault of this kind carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison if intentional, but Naomi got just five days community service. Apart from this, the court has ordered that she pay the housekeeper's medical bills of $363 and take anger management classes.
''I pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in court today. That's the best way I know to say I'm sorry to Ana. I accepted responsibility and I'm prepared to take my punishment. But I'm not going to let this incident define me. The past is the past. My future holds great things and I'm getting on with my life,'' a statement issued by Naomi's publicist read.
