Calling the Supreme Court order a significant step towards mining, the National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR) welcomed the Central Empowered Committee’s (CEC) report on mining here on Thursday.
Lauding the change towards holding illegal miners accountable, the NCPNR appreciated the specific and effective conditions after partial lifting of the ban on mining in Bellary district while extending it to Chitradurga and Tumkur.
It has also urged its stakeholders to work together for effective implementation of the Supreme Court order passed on September 3.
The court order directs the CEC, upon inspection, to submit a report to it with details that the mining activity will be carried on strictly within the specified parameters and without any violations.
According to this direction, the report should be filed within one month of leave to commence mining activity by the commercial leaseholders.
Trade Bodies Hail SC Order
The Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) has expressed happiness over the SC’s order which allows mining operations in 18 ‘A’ category mines in the State.
President of the forum K Shiva Shanmugam said that though this move may not pave way for iron ore exports, it will be a sign of relief for more than 10,000 mining employees and transporters in the State, who were rendered jobless and also revive the sponge iron units in and around Bellary.
The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has also expressed satisfaction over the SC order.
In a statement, J Crasta, Co-chairman, ASSOCHAM’s Southern Regional Council, expressed that, with the lifting of ban, mining operations would start soon, easing supply of iron ore to steel companies in the State.
He hoped that the mines would be granted other statutory clearances at the earliest so that mining operations may start right away.
